DUE TO MARGUERITE’S devoted nursing Laurent showed much improvement, and there was less permanent damage than had first appeared. His speech was still impaired and not all visitors who came to see him could fully grasp his words, which allowed them to do most of the talking. Everyone was primed beforehand by Marguerite not to reveal Jasmin’s marriage.

“It could cause a relapse if he knew,” she explained truthfully, recalling how she herself had almost collapsed when she had received her daughter’s sad farewell letter written at Versailles. “The baron thinks she is in Italy.”

She always left him alone with his callers, for they helped to ease him into an acceptance of her being absent from him for short periods. How she would have managed without Berthe to assist her she did not know.

At first he had been too ill to have any conception of the passage of time, but with the betterment of his condition he began asking about correspondence from Jasmin. Marguerite made excuses, hoping that the next day would bring one, already sick with worry herself that nothing had come. Eventually when he started to fret she was left with no alternative.
